I am not suggesting Civil Air Patrol members not wear a uniform — I am suggesting that it is inappropriate for Civil Air Patrol members to be wearing a modified Air Force Uniform unless they are a part of the Department of Defense and the Air Force instead of being a non-profit corporation. The Civil Air Patrol is structured similar to the American Red Cross which is also a Congressionally chartered non-profit corporation — both perform similar services to the public with the exception of sorties and search and rescue. The Civil Air Patrol might assist the Air Force under certain circumstances — but most of the time members are not on any so called “Air Force mission”. I am not trying to rank down the Civil Air Patrol – but you have to admit their members have many military wannabes and that element does a disservice to our men and women in uniform who have taken the actual oath of office binding them to an actual military service contract they are legally bound to.

CAP is a federally chartered non-profit, yes, but it also serves as the US Air Force Auxillary, and is OFFICIALLY part of the US Air Force Total Force package. (See Air Force Doctrine Vol 2 “Leadership” from 2015). CAP, when acting on behalf of the Air Force, CAP is aligned under First Air Force.
Due to the alignment with the USAF, and being part of First Air Force, CAP members do wear USAF uniforms and carry grade. Each CAP adult member that carries grade swears an oath that is administered by a designated authoritative member. This allows CAP to integrate and work directly with USAF members when serving on a mission assigned by the USAF.
The youth in the program wear the uniform, as it fosters teamwork, unity, pride, self confidence and respect. These attributes do not automatically stop at the end of a meeting, rather the youth carry those characteristics into their daily life, making them better internally.
Finally, if you wish to make statements, claim them as your own, and do not generalize without justification. I am a military retiree, hold a leadership position in CAP, and have many other military retirees and active duty military that report to me in CAP. I do not agree with your opinion “so them holding military titles, wearing a modified Air Force Uniform, and executing military courtesies is a slap in the face of our men and women who are members of the Military and who are subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice” None of my members will agree with your statement. Can You Quit Civil Air Patrol?
If you’re a member of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), you may be wondering if you can quit. The answer is yes, you can definitely quit the CAP if you choose to do so.

However, if you do choose to quit the Civil Air Patrol, you should be aware that you will no longer be eligible for any of the benefits associated with being a member. This includes access to exclusive events, discounts on merchandise, and the ability to participate in CAP sponsored activities. Additionally, if you’ve earned any awards or recognition during your time with the CAP, you’ll no longer be able to display them prominently on your resume or other documents.

The reason the Civil Air Patrol is considered a joke is because the members try to be military when they are not. It is not a component of the U.S. Airforce – it is a Congressionally chartered non-profit corporation that is the civilian auxiliary to the Air Force as a force multiplier – but it is not part of the Air Force. It is not part of the Federal Government. I do not think members of the Civil Air Patrol should be permitted to wear any semblance of the Air Force Uniform unless Congress were to pass a Public Law that would change their non-profit corporation status to being an actual part of the Department of Defense and the Air Force. And if that were to miraculously happen, then I think Civil Air Patrol members need to not have military titles because they are not members of the military – they are not commissioned by the President of the United States – so them holding military titles, wearing a modified Air Force Uniform, and executing military courtesies is a slap in the face of our men and women who are members of the Military and who are subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice. I am not suggesting Civil Air Patrol members not wear a uniform — I am suggesting that it is inappropriate for Civil Air Patrol members to be wearing a modified Air Force Uniform unless they are a part of the Department of Defense and the Air Force instead of being a non-profit corporation. The Civil Air Patrol is structured similar to the American Red Cross which is also a Congressionally chartered non-profit corporation — both perform similar services to the public with the exception of sorties and search and rescue. The Civil Air Patrol might assist the Air Force under certain circumstances — but most of the time members are not on any so called “Air Force mission”. I am not trying to rank down the Civil Air Patrol – but you have to admit their members have many military wannabes and that element does a disservice to our men and women in uniform who have taken the actual oath of office binding them to an actual military service contract they are legally bound to.

Chaplain Zylstra, Wow, what better way can one say that I was not accepted in my chosen role as a Chaplain in Civil Air Patrol, than one that makes claims that are unfounded and untrue.
CAP is a federally chartered non-profit, yes, but it also serves as the US Air Force Auxillary, and is OFFICIALLY part of the US Air Force Total Force package. (See Air Force Doctrine Vol 2 “Leadership” from 2015). CAP, when acting on behalf of the Air Force, CAP is aligned under First Air Force.
Due to the alignment with the USAF, and being part of First Air Force, CAP members do wear USAF uniforms and carry grade. Each CAP adult member that carries grade swears an oath that is administered by a designated authoritative member. This allows CAP to integrate and work directly with USAF members when serving on a mission assigned by the USAF.
The youth in the program wear the uniform, as it fosters teamwork, unity, pride, self confidence and respect. These attributes do not automatically stop at the end of a meeting, rather the youth carry those characteristics into their daily life, making them better internally.
Finally, if you wish to make statements, claim them as your own, and do not generalize without justification. I am a military retiree, hold a leadership position in CAP, and have many other military retirees and active duty military that report to me in CAP. I do not agree with your opinion “so them holding military titles, wearing a modified Air Force Uniform, and executing military courtesies is a slap in the face of our men and women who are members of the Military and who are subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice” None of my members will agree with your statement. In fact, in my opinion personally, I feel that the program provides a valuable service, and has saved many more lives than you could imagine.
